Pottery and Painting

Visual Arts Program -- From 3D to 2D
As you may know, the visual arts program provided by Arts Enter will expose students to the art and experience of four different local visual artists this year. Our first session, with potter Elizabeth Hunt, ended this Tuesday.

Pottery
Ms. Hunt started with the three-dimensional challenge where students learned beginning hand-building clay techniques and basic pinch pots, wheel-throwing, decorating and glazing. They now understand the difference between function and sculpture and the science of how clay is found in the earth. The students learned about the firing process and the finished glaze firing that renders the clay projects almost eternal. This aspect of durability opens the topic of Art History and the Etuscan, Greek and Roman era which have been illustrated.

The Arts Enter will have all the student work on display this weekend in the Stage Door Gallery. Stop by during the Babes on the Bay event from 5-8 on Saturday, or visit Sunday afternoon.

Painting
The creative process of making art helps students deal with their emotional needs, their self esteem and self discipline. Together with learning how to work with one another and seeing the rewards of hard work, they also sharpen their intellectual skills. Through the Arts, students become participants rather than listeners. In the Arts, where there in no rule of right or wrong, children experience success and with success comes a desire to learn more.

Session 2 will begin next Tuesday and will introduce the students to watercolor artist Diana Davis. We will be learning the technique of wash, color blending, texture and composition. Each child's natural style will emerge through a series of exercises designed to open their artistic eye. The students will create a personal portfolio. They will learn how color can create emotion in a work of art. Students will be drawing from life forms and from their imagination. It is critical for students to become comfortable and confident about translating thoughts and ideas onto paper through drawing.

Halloween Night

by
Candace Bowden

One day before Halloween night in 2009 their was this little girl who loved Halloween. Her name was Nicky. She was so happy that it was Halloween. This was her fourth year trick or treating. She was going to be a balarina. Her mom asked her to get her clothes on so they can go to the store. So once she got her clothes on and her mom said let’s hit the road. So Nicky acshly hit the road. So they got in the car and went to the store. Nicky saw a Jackolantern and begged her Mom to get it. It was $2.99. Her mom said yes so Nicky grabbed the Jackolantern. When she got in the store something sounded kinda like a boo noise but Nicky didn’t care. She still loved the Jackolantern. So when they went to check out stand her mom said is this the pumpkin you want? Nicky said yes mom this is the one I want. So Nicky’s mom took the $2.99 pumpkin but then Nicky saw a comic book and she said Mom I want this instead of the Jackolantern. So her mom took the pumpkin back and got the comic book for Nicky. So when they got home it was 8:00 time for you to go to bed. So Nicky hopped in bed and grabbed all of her stuffed animals and layed back and closed her eyes. She couldn’t believe it was Halloween.

Tomorrow night it was 9:00 when she fell asleep. She was dreaming about the Jackolantern. She saw it was coming to haunt her. She had the chill’s all night. So why she was having a dream it acshally came true. The pumpkin was haunting her but it was trashing her room. It was morning and her mom called her for breakfast so she got out of bed and her room was a reck! So she screamed for her mom and her mom ran to Nicky’s room and asked her what was wrong and she said in a very scared voice “look at my room!” Her mom asked her if she herd anything last night and Nicky said Noop, not a sound. So they went to the kitchen and got some breakfast but why they eating breakfast they were also thinking. What happened to Nicky’s room and also why they were eating breakfast Nicky told her mom about her dream last night. So once they were done they went to Nicky’s room and Nicky infeastagated and Nicky found part of a pumpkin in her room and was wondering if the dream came true. And she told her mom maybe my dream came true. Nicky’s mom said don’t be silly. Dream’s couldn’t come true and then Nicky showed her mom the piece of pumpkin and her mom said get some clothes on were going to the store. And bying that pumpkin so this will never happen again. So they went and bought the pumpkin so when they got home it was time to go trick-or-treating and Nicky was happy.

One day in ancient Egypt their was two men. The men’s names were Jim and Ryan. They were walking in the middle of the dessert. They saw a pyramid in the distance. They went inside and the door shut and locked on them. Ryan said, “This is scary. I think there is another exit.” “Maybe, “ said Jim. They walked and walked until they heard foot steps. It sounded like they were coming towred them. Then out of the corner of his eye Jim saw a white figure swoosh past them. “Queen Cleapatchra” said Jim. But it was probably my mind playing tricks on me. Then they found a door that lead into a tomb. “Wow” said Ryan. The chamber was filled with treasure. Then Jim took some treasure and put it in his pocket. Later Jim saw the figure again. “Run!” said Jim. “Which way is out?” said Ryan. They were lost in a false passage! “This way” they said. They both pointed in different directions. They ran until they saw a light. “Give me back my treasure” said a voice. It was Cleapatchra! Her eyes were glowing yellow. “Give me back my treasure!” She wanted the treasure Jim took. They got out side in the sunlight and cleapachra faded away. “That was scary” said Ryan. They walked to the helicopter. Ryan drove them home.

The end.

Beware!

By Addy Lyon

One dark night a young girl named Emily and her sister Carleen went on a walk. First they asked their parents they said yes, but be back by 5:45. It was 4:30 when we asked. So, they went on a walk to an old gas station to get snacks. When they came out they were tired so they sat down on the ground in a dark and spookey alley close to home. In a heart beat the doors slammed together on the long narrow sides of the alley. It became 4:56 then 5:59. Moments later an old man walks out with a scary grin on his face. He said, “You are in great danger. It is after you.”

Emily says, “What is?”

The old man said, “The evil, dangerous, mean, scary and unhappy thing.”

Carleen said, “How can we get home?”

He says, “I will let you go if you never come back.”

Emily and Carleen ran so fast they barely could breathe. They got home and never went back. By then it was 6:30 and their parents were very very scared and frightened. The girls got their Halloween outfits on and ran out the door. They went door to door getting candy. At 7:00, they saw the old man at the corner and he said, “Well done. Most people would have come back and died right here…” The girls went home and ate their candy and never saw the old man again.

The Haunted Nolan

By Colin Renas

One day in school, Nolan acted crazy so I told Nolan to go to that scary black house in Cape Charles. So me, Nolan, and Masen went to the house and I said, “Nolan, why are you acting crazy?”

“I have problems,” Nolan said.

“Okay,” said Masen. So we went inside the scary house and Nolan locked the door.

“Why did you do that?” Masen asked. Nolan started to turn into a big hairy, fast wolf that could run on two feet. So, Masen and I ran upstairs, and we tried to get out of a window, but it was stuck. We were looking for something to break the window. Masen found a hammer. He picked up the hammer and broke the window, but we were too high. I found some rope and we tied it to a piano and we climbed down, out the window, and down the rope. When we got down, we called 911 and told them there is a wolf that could stand on two feet and they went into the house and put Nolan in jail.

The Jersey Devil

By Zach Karageorge

The Glaskos were new in town. They had just moved to Kronskie, New Jersey. The parents were no nonsense people who had closed minded beliefs. They had a ten year old son named James. On James’s first day of school, he was told of the Jersey Devil, a horse-faced, bat winged humanoid with hooves. When he got home he pondered the story, then retold it to his parents who dismissed it.

After two months of monotony in the Glaskos home, something happened. When the Glaskos had all left for work/school, their dog Grey disappeared. What was really strange is that when the Glaskos got home all the windows and doors were still shut and locked. They searched for hours, but finally went home and prayed that the dog would return.

The next day, James retold the story to his friends and most of them admitted a similar disappearance of a pet. Two said, “It was the work of the devil.”

Another said, “You are all PARANOID. It’s sad.” One boy advised him to sprinkle holy water over the entryways in the entire house, so when James got home he sprinkled everything.

When his parents saw him, they were perturbed. They wondered what their son was doing. When he explained, his parents sent him to his room for making up stories. The next day, the Glaskos found the dog’s collar on the front porch shredded, covered in mud, blood, and the stink of rot.

That night the storm of the century rolled into the Pine Barrens. At 12:00 a.m., there was a god-awful sound. It was an agonizing shriek to rip your soul in half! Now the Glaskos were awake. They were up in their house on the hill, sitting in their living room waiting out the storm and wondering what had shrieked.

Suddenly a tattoo of beatings and rapping started on the roof and windows accompanied by more howls. Occasionally the deathly music would cease then return with a vengeance. Finally, a flash of false daylight 25 feet away from the house lit up the entire county. Framed in the window was a stunned gargoylish creature with fire in its eyes. A millisecond later, the thunder was so loud that it broke the windows of the house.

The creature revived from its stunned state, stood erect, and screamed to the sky before it flew away. The rest of the night the Glaskos sat huddled on the couch with a gun at the ready in case the creature came back to resume its beatings on the house.

The next day, they packed and moved into the local motel. There the devil followed causing damage to the building. Finally the Glaskos evacuated from the state. On their way out of town, they found their dog covered in mud and the devil’s blood.

The Dagger

By Rachel Creed

Hey, my name’s Katie. I’m 13. I live in the small, historic town of Cape Charles. I’m pretty skinny, and pretty clumsy. Let’s get one thing straight. I am not afraid of anything. I go sky-diving. I explore murder scenes. Once, I jumped off the school building. Well, I’m usually not afraid of anything. I do tend to wince at the thought of death. I just try not to think about it when I’m doing something dangerous. But when someone has a dagger and they are about to plunge it right into your throat, you get cautious.

Okay, let’s start from the beginning. My parents, who are commercial directors, were filming in Beverly Hills. My idiot-for-a-babysitter, Mary, was out with her boyfriend Jon. Knowing Mary, she wouldn’t be back until 3:00 in the morning. It was only five o’clock p.m. when I figured I’d go for a little adventure. I went around the block, and saw something weird behind the Baptist Church. There was this old, caved in house. “That’s weird…” I thought aloud. “Seems like I got a run down house to explore!” I ran over to check it out. I went inside and looked around. I couldn’t believe it. Inside it looked as if someone was living there! The floor was swept. There was a couch and a television set left on. I could smell pizza coming from the kitchen! And what made me really sure was that I heard voices. “Uh-oh,” I thought. “I better get out of here!” But when I turned around the door was shut tight. I tried to open it, but it was locked! I kept trying when suddenly I was grabbed by the shoulder and turned around.

“And just who are you, may I ask?” a strange woman spit out roughly.

“Er, Katie,” I said. “I’m really sorry. I didn’t know anyone lived here. I’ll just be going-“

“No! You must stay! I haven’t had a guest in decades!!!!” the strange woman shouted. It was really disturbing. I tried to run, but she grabbed my arm and dug her nails into my skin. It really hurt! She pulled out a dagger and aimed it at my neck. I was afraid. Luckily, that only made it easier for me to knock it from her hand. For some reason she didn’t bother to pick it up. She just stood there staring at me.

I wondered if I could possibly take her down. She was huge. Maybe she wasn’t very strong, but she could use her weight against me. She stabbed a finger at me and told me to stay put. Then she walked upstairs. Did I listen to her? Yes. Did I obey? No. I heard foot steps coming back down the stairs. I quickly opened the window and jumped out. I took a few steps, and I just couldn’t believe it. I tripped over my own feet! I turned around, and there the crazy old woman was, shouting at me through her window. You haven‘t even given me a chance!!!” I struggled to my feet and began to run home.

“How do you like me now, you CREEP?” I shouted behind me. I ran home and locked all the doors and windows. Everything went okay for the rest of the night. The next day, just out of curiosity, I went to check out the house I’d pondered yesterday. When I first saw the house the other day, I was really surprised. Where the house used to be behind the church, there was only ruins! I quickly ran over. There wasn’t anything there that would have ever shown anyone had ever lived there. That’s when I saw something that really gave me a fright. On a little pile of ruins, there was a dagger.

THIS WEEK @ CCCS 10/1

Stewardship at CCCS: October focus is the Food Bank

Teaching and modeling stewardship is a part of the mission of CCCS. Throughout September, our classes have been introduced to ideas that connect us with our Town and surroundings. The Patriots' Day ceremony and procession is an example of this.

Our focus for October is the Food Bank. This mission of Trinity Methodist Church provides a service that many families in our community rely upon. CCCS will conduct a canned food drive in early October.

Please bring canned food to school any day between now and Tuesday 10/13.

The Food Bank is also conducting a food drive at Food Lion on Saturday 10/3. We encourage all of our CCCS families to participate in this important cause.

Parade Winners!

As seen in the Wednesday 9/30 Edition of Eastern Shore News! The Middle School students of Cape Charles Christian School made an excellent showing in the town's annual Fall Tomato Festival.

Their winning entry demonstrated the life cycle of a tomato plant and included: seeds, young plants, mature plants, green tomato, red tomato, bees as pollinators, and several food products (ketchup and spaghetti).

The float entry won TWO awards at the parade: Best Novelty Float and Best Dressed Golf Cart.

We're proud of you!

ASK your kids!
Jumping for... Math?

"Coach Victor" as he's known around the halls is a man of many hats! In addition to orchestrating our Athletic Program and spearheading our Morning Fitness, Victor plays a critical role as a Teachers' Aide for several cluster classes.

Ask your kids... about their jumping games in Math class? Some educators would call this Kinetic Learning. It boils down to this-- some students learn better if they are moving and if they can let off some excess energy. Victor's creative math classes were a big hit at school this week.

Arts Enter Event- Friday July 17th at 2 and 7

Come one, come all!

Our partner in the arts, the Arts Enter Cape Charles, has put together an adorable production for children by children of the Pied Piper! These kids have been working hard for two weeks on set design, costumes, and of course the performance.

Arts Enter has offered to assist with a similar production by our first year students later in the Fall!

Let's support their efforts... performances are at 2 pm and 7 pm on Friday.
Admission is only $5 for adults and $3 for children at the Historic Palace Theater on Mason Ave.

Ready for School! the Countdown Continues

Hi All--

As you can imagine, we're very busy getting ready for the first school year to begin in roughly SEVEN short weeks. We have HAPPY NEWS to announce!

As of today, we will begin the 2009/2010 school year with 45 students! Ranging from Kindergarten through 8th grades, they will make up the first student body of Cape Charles Christian School.

We have a stunning lineup of teaching staff to support the individualized, loving, attentive, and challenging learning and growth that will happen in the next year, under the Lord's watchful eye:

K-5 Lower School
Gwyn Coghill, Principal
Carrie Cabello, K-1 Cluster
Leslie Savage, 2-3 Cluster
Kate Tayloe, 4-5 Cluster

6-8 Middle School
Andrea Price, Principal
Holly Hubbard, English and Social Studies
Andrea Davis, Math and Science

Valerie Travis, Assistant to the Adminstration
Victor Abrahamian, Teacher's Aide and Athletic Director
Jenn Philpot, Chapel Coordinator

We are truly blessed with this group of enthusiastic educators! You may have noticed some additions and changes? YES!

First, Valerie Travis, having retired this Spring from Kiptopeke Elementary as a Pre-K teacher (and with 34 years of teaching under her belt and a following that rivals the Pied Piper) has offered to volunteer along with Gwyn Coghill and Andrea Price in guiding and supporting our new school as an Assistant to the Administration.

Next, although we initially planned for Andrea Price to cover both principal and teacher roles in the Middle School, she has decided to focus her attention on the administration and has offered her services as a volunteer employee!

And last, rounding out the teaching staff, Andrea Davis has joined us to teach Middle School Math and Science. She's a graduate of SanDiego State Univeristy, with an MA in Education and is National Board Certified in Early Adolescent Science. She's taught in California and Pennsylvania, but moved to the shore to be closer to family. She says, "I look forward to working with my students and helping them to gain understanding and connection to the worlds of Math and Science."

But WAIT, there's MORE...

Trinity United Methodist Church in Cape Charles has offered roughly 2600 sqft of classroom space! We will be able to house everyone under ONE roof for regular classes, expanding to additional space in Cape Charles Baptist as well as other locations around town, such as Arts Enter, for special classes.

It's shaping up to be a fantastic year. We are still accepting students. If you're interested, please contact us.

Annapolis trip deemed a success

As you may know, a small group from the organizing committee visited the Annapolis Area Christian School yesterday. We are considering AACS a "mentor" as we further develop the model and tenets of our new school. http://www.aacsonline.org/

AACS was extremely welcoming and encouraging. Their three schools (lower, middle, upper) are wonderful, mature learning environments full of very happy children.

We collected invaluable information on policy, curriculum, staffing, admissions and many other topics that will help tremendously in the next few months.

Welcome! Let's get started...

“Yes, Virginia, there is…” going to be a new school in Cape Charles in September 2009!

Thank you to all who have expressed interest and attended meetings so far in our efforts to form a new school, The Cape Charles Christian School. We’ll need your continued support and effort in the coming months as this becomes a reality.

First things first… we need to spread the word! Please forward this announcement to anyone you know who might like to become involved, attend, or donate. Encourage everyone to ask questions. We’d like to be as factual and informative as possible, and as such, we’ll be sending out a series of email updates and web site announcements to keep you all up to date on what’s going on with this exciting development for our town.

Background

How does such a thing come about? A small group of parents in Cape Charles set about exploring the possibilities of an alternative education option for lower Northampton County. After considering and rejecting the charter school model, they’ve focused on building a Christian school that will initially serve Pre K through 8th grades, with plans to expand to 9th through 12th, one grade per year in future years.

Our Mission

We are a group of parents, teachers, and members of the community who have come together with a common interest.

Our vision is to create an alternative education option for lower No rthampton County. This new school will provide an encouraging, supportive, creative environment for our children with an integrated Christian perspective. We will begin the first year of classes at Cape Charles Christian School in the Fall of 2009.

In addition, we recognize the revitalizing effect a school can have on its surrounding community and intend to rebuild what was once an important presence in Cape Charles by renovating the former Cape Charles High School.

Please join us in this exciting opportunity.
