Slaves, Rum and Taxes- History Reenacted

Our sixth and seventh grade History students were involved in a simulation of Triangular Trade. Students did a role playing exercise and went through the trade route between Africa, the West Indies, and New England. They exchanged goods (slaves, molasses, and rum) for money, paid the tax collector and made profits on their products.

When the simulation was over, students counted their money and came to the quick conclusion that King George was taking way too much money in taxes. He made more money than any other participant and did none of the work. This was upsetting to the students and an interesting discussion followed as history became more real to them.

Fall Clean-up Success!

Thanks to all the students and families that came out to help with our first annual Fall Clean-up Day. We moved through Cape Charles like a great windstorm picking up leaves, sticks and debris! Thanks too for our many generous sponsors.

Pottery and Painting

Visual Arts Program -- From 3D to 2D
As you may know, the visual arts program provided by Arts Enter will expose students to the art and experience of four different local visual artists this year. Our first session, with potter Elizabeth Hunt, ended this Tuesday.

Pottery
Ms. Hunt started with the three-dimensional challenge where students learned beginning hand-building clay techniques and basic pinch pots, wheel-throwing, decorating and glazing. They now understand the difference between function and sculpture and the science of how clay is found in the earth. The students learned about the firing process and the finished glaze firing that renders the clay projects almost eternal. This aspect of durability opens the topic of Art History and the Etuscan, Greek and Roman era which have been illustrated.

The Arts Enter will have all the student work on display this weekend in the Stage Door Gallery. Stop by during the Babes on the Bay event from 5-8 on Saturday, or visit Sunday afternoon.

Painting
The creative process of making art helps students deal with their emotional needs, their self esteem and self discipline. Together with learning how to work with one another and seeing the rewards of hard work, they also sharpen their intellectual skills. Through the Arts, students become participants rather than listeners. In the Arts, where there in no rule of right or wrong, children experience success and with success comes a desire to learn more.

Session 2 will begin next Tuesday and will introduce the students to watercolor artist Diana Davis. We will be learning the technique of wash, color blending, texture and composition. Each child's natural style will emerge through a series of exercises designed to open their artistic eye. The students will create a personal portfolio. They will learn how color can create emotion in a work of art. Students will be drawing from life forms and from their imagination. It is critical for students to become comfortable and confident about translating thoughts and ideas onto paper through drawing.
